And yet words on a parchment would not be enough to deliver slaves from bondage, or provide men and women of every color and charles dickens school life, creed their full rights and obligations as citizens of the United States. What would be needed were Americans in successive generations who were willing to do their part through protests and struggles, on the streets and in on artwork the courts, through a civil war and civil disobedience, and always at great risk to narrow that gap between the charles dickens promise of our ideals and the reality of their time. This was one of the tasks we set forth at the beginning of this presidential campaign to continue the long march of those who came before us, a march for a more just, more equal, more free, more caring and more prosperous America.

I chose to run for president at ecological, this moment in charles life history because I believe deeply that we cannot solve the challenges of our time unless we solve them together, unless we perfect our union by understanding that we may have different stories, but we hold common hopes; that we may not look the same and we may not have come from the same place, but we all want to move in the same direction toward a better future for system, our children and our grandchildren. This belief comes from charles dickens school my unyielding faith in the decency and generosity of the American people. But it also comes from my own story. I am the son of a black man from Essay about Kenya and a white woman from Kansas. I was raised with the help of a white grandfather who survived a Depression to serve in Patton's Army during World War II and a white grandmother who worked on a bomber assembly line at Fort Leavenworth while he was overseas.

I've gone to some of the best schools in America and lived in charles dickens life one of the world's poorest nations. Essay Stem Cell. I am married to dickens life a black American who carries within her the blood of slaves and slaveowners an ecological system inheritance we pass on to our two precious daughters. I have brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, uncles and cousins of every race and every hue, scattered across three continents, and for as long as I live, I will never forget that in no other country on Earth is my story even possible. It's a story that hasn't made me the most conventional of dickens school life candidates. But it is a story that has seared into my genetic makeup the idea that this nation is more than the invented sum of its parts that out of life many, we are truly one. Throughout the first year of this campaign, against essay on artwork all predictions to school life the contrary, we saw how hungry the scarlet American people were for this message of unity. Despite the temptation to view my candidacy through a purely racial lens, we won commanding victories in states with some of the whitest populations in the country. In South Carolina, where the Confederate flag still flies, we built a powerful coalition of charles school life African-Americans and about Stem Cell Research, white Americans.

This is not to say that race has not been an issue in this campaign. At various stages in the campaign, some commentators have deemed me either too black or not black enough. We saw racial tensions bubble to charles school the surface during the week before the South Carolina primary. Ecological. The press has scoured every single exit poll for the latest evidence of racial polarization, not just in terms of white and charles dickens school life, black, but black and brown as well. And yet, it has only been in the last couple of weeks that the discussion of race in this campaign has taken a particularly divisive turn.

On one end of the spectrum, we've heard the implication that my candidacy is somehow an exercise in affirmative action; that it's based solely on the desire of wide-eyed liberals to purchase racial reconciliation on the cheap. On the other end, we've heard my former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, use incendiary language to express views that have the potential not only to widen the racial divide, but views that denigrate both the greatness and the goodness of our nation, and that rightly offend white and black alike. I have already condemned, in unequivocal terms, the statements of ecological Reverend Wright that have caused such controversy and, in some cases, pain. For some, nagging questions remain. Did I know him to be an occasionally fierce critic of American domestic and foreign policy? Of course. Did I ever hear him make remarks that could be considered controversial while I sat in the church?

Yes. Did I strongly disagree with many of dickens school life his political views? Absolutely just as I'm sure many of you have heard remarks from your pastors, priests, or rabbis with which you strongly disagreed. But the on Memory Essay example remarks that have caused this recent firestorm weren't simply controversial. They weren't simply a religious leader's efforts to speak out against perceived injustice. Instead, they expressed a profoundly distorted view of this country a view that sees white racism as endemic, and that elevates what is wrong with America above all that we know is charles school, right with America; a view that sees the conflicts in essay the Middle East as rooted primarily in the actions of stalwart allies like Israel, instead of school life emanating from the perverse and hateful ideologies of radical Islam. As such, Reverend Wright's comments were not only wrong but divisive, divisive at a time when we need unity; racially charged at a time when we need to come together to solve a set of invented monumental problems two wars, a terrorist threat, a falling economy, a chronic health care crisis and potentially devastating climate change problems that are neither black or white or Latino or Asian, but rather problems that confront us all.

Given my background, my politics, and my professed values and dickens, ideals, there will no doubt be those for whom my statements of A Stroke’s on Memory Essay condemnation are not enough. Why associate myself with Reverend Wright in life the first place, they may ask? Why not join another church? And I confess that if all that I knew of Reverend Wright were the snippets of those sermons that have run in an endless loop on about Research the television sets and charles dickens school, YouTube, or if Trinity United Church of Christ conformed to the caricatures being peddled by some commentators, there is no doubt that I would react in much the same way. But the truth is, that isn't all that I know of the man. The man I met more than 20 years ago is a man who helped introduce me to my Christian faith, a man who spoke to me about our obligations to love one another, to care for the sick and lift up the Essay about Cell Research poor. He is charles school, a man who served his country as a United States Marine; who has studied and lectured at some of the finest universities and ecological, seminaries in the country, and who for charles school life, over 30 years has led a church that serves the community by doing God's work here on Earth by housing the homeless, ministering to ecological the needy, providing day care services and scholarships and life, prison ministries, and reaching out to those suffering from HIV/AIDS. In my first book, Dreams From My Father , I describe the experience of time period my first service at Trinity:

People began to shout, to dickens life rise from their seats and clap and cry out, a forceful wind carrying the how was invented reverend's voice up into the rafters. And in that single note hope! I heard something else: At the foot of that cross, inside the thousands of churches across the city, I imagined the stories of ordinary black people merging with the stories of David and Goliath, Moses and Pharaoh, the Christians in school life the lion's den, Ezekiel's field of ecological system dry bones. Those stories of survival and freedom and hope became our stories, my story. The blood that spilled was our blood, the charles dickens life tears our tears, until this black church, on this bright day, seemed once more a vessel carrying the story of a people into future generations and into a larger world. Our trials and triumphs became at once unique and universal, black and more than black. In chronicling our journey, the stories and songs gave us a meaning to reclaim memories that we didn't need to feel shame about memories that all people might study and cherish, and with which we could start to rebuild.

That has been my experience at Trinity. Essay About And Treatment. Like other predominantly black churches across the charles country, Trinity embodies the black community in its entirety the doctor and how was electricity invented, the welfare mom, the model student and the former gang-banger. Life. Like other black churches, Trinity's services are full of time period raucous laughter and sometimes bawdy humor. They are full of dancing and life, clapping and screaming and shouting that may seem jarring to the untrained ear. The church contains in full the kindness and optimism, cruelty, the fierce intelligence and the shocking ignorance, the struggles and successes, the love and, yes, the bitterness and biases that make up the black experience in America. And this helps explain, perhaps, my relationship with Reverend Wright. Charles. As imperfect as he may be, he has been like family to me. He strengthened my faith, officiated my wedding, and A Stroke’s on Memory Essay example, baptized my children.

Not once in my conversations with him have I heard him talk about any ethnic group in derogatory terms, or treat whites with whom he interacted with anything but courtesy and respect. Charles Dickens Life. He contains within him the contradictions the good and the bad of the community that he has served diligently for so many years. I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. Leibniz. I can no more disown him than I can disown my white grandmother a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for charles dickens, me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in letter time period this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed her by on charles dickens school the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe. These people are a part of me.

And they are part of electricity invented America, this country that I love. Some will see this as an attempt to charles school justify or excuse comments that are simply inexcusable. I can assure you it is not. I suppose the politically safe thing to do would be to A Stroke’s on Memory Essay example move on from this episode and just hope that it fades into dickens life the woodwork. We can dismiss Reverend Wright as a crank or a demagogue, just as some have dismissed Geraldine Ferraro, in essay the aftermath of her recent statements, as harboring some deep-seated bias. But race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to charles dickens school life ignore right now. We would be making the same mistake that Reverend Wright made in his offending sermons about essay on artwork America to simplify and stereotype and amplify the negative to the point that it distorts reality. The fact is that the comments that have been made and dickens, the issues that have surfaced over the last few weeks reflect the complexities of on Memory Essay race in this country that we've never really worked through a part of our union that we have not yet made perfect. And if we walk away now, if we simply retreat into our respective corners, we will never be able to charles come together and solve challenges like health care or education or the need to find good jobs for every American. Understanding this reality requires a reminder of how we arrived at this point. As William Faulkner once wrote, The past isn't dead and buried.

In fact, it isn't even past. We do not need to recite here the history of leibniz optimism racial injustice in this country. But we do need to remind ourselves that so many of the charles dickens life disparities that exist between the African-American community and the larger American community today can be traced directly to inequalities passed on from an earlier generation that suffered under the brutal legacy of slavery and Jim Crow. Segregated schools were and are inferior schools; we still haven't fixed them, 50 years after Brown v. Board of on Memory Essay example Education. And the inferior education they provided, then and life, now, helps explain the A Stroke’s on Memory Essay example pervasive achievement gap between today's black and life, white students. Legalized discrimination where blacks were prevented, often through violence, from owning property, or loans were not granted to about Stem Research and Treatment African-American business owners, or black homeowners could not access FHA mortgages, or blacks were excluded from charles dickens unions or the police force or the fire department meant that black families could not amass any meaningful wealth to bequeath to future generations. That history helps explain the wealth and income gap between blacks and whites, and the concentrated pockets of poverty that persist in so many of today's urban and rural communities. A lack of economic opportunity among black men, and Effect on Memory Essay example, the shame and dickens life, frustration that came from not being able to provide for one's family contributed to the erosion of Stem and Treatment black families a problem that welfare policies for many years may have worsened. And the lack of basic services in so many urban black neighborhoods parks for dickens school life, kids to play in, police walking the beat, regular garbage pickup, building code enforcement all helped create a cycle of ecological system violence, blight and neglect that continues to haunt us. This is the charles dickens life reality in which Reverend Wright and other African-Americans of system his generation grew up.

They came of age in the late '50s and early '60s, a time when segregation was still the law of the land and opportunity was systematically constricted. What's remarkable is not how many failed in the face of discrimination, but how many men and women overcame the odds; how many were able to make a way out of no way, for those like me who would come after them. For all those who scratched and clawed their way to get a piece of the American Dream, there were many who didn't make it those who were ultimately defeated, in one way or another, by discrimination. That legacy of defeat was passed on to future generations those young men and, increasingly, young women who we see standing on street corners or languishing in our prisons, without hope or prospects for dickens, the future. Even for scarlet letter time period, those blacks who did make it, questions of race and racism continue to define their worldview in fundamental ways. For the men and women of Reverend Wright's generation, the dickens school life memories of humiliation and doubt and fear have not gone away; nor has the period anger and the bitterness of those years. That anger may not get expressed in charles dickens public, in front of white co-workers or white friends. But it does find voice in the barbershop or the beauty shop or around the kitchen table.

At times, that anger is leibniz, exploited by dickens life politicians, to gin up votes along racial lines, or to Essay make up for a politician's own failings. And occasionally it finds voice in life the church on Sunday morning, in on Memory the pulpit and in dickens school life the pews. The fact that so many people are surprised to hear that anger in some of Reverend Wright's sermons simply reminds us of the old truism that the most segregated hour of American life occurs on Sunday morning. That anger is not always productive; indeed, all too often it distracts attention from system solving real problems; it keeps us from squarely facing our own complicity within the African-American community in charles dickens school our condition, and prevents the African-American community from scarlet letter period forging the charles dickens life alliances it needs to bring about ecological real change. But the anger is real; it is powerful. And to simply wish it away, to condemn it without understanding its roots, only charles, serves to widen the chasm of misunderstanding that exists between the races.

In fact, a similar anger exists within segments of the Essay about Cell white community. Most working- and middle-class white Americans don't feel that they have been particularly privileged by dickens school life their race. Effect On Memory. Their experience is the immigrant experience as far as they're concerned, no one handed them anything. They built it from scratch. They've worked hard all their lives, many times only to see their jobs shipped overseas or their pensions dumped after a lifetime of labor. They are anxious about their futures, and they feel their dreams slipping away. And in an era of stagnant wages and global competition, opportunity comes to be seen as a zero sum game, in which your dreams come at my expense.

So when they are told to bus their children to a school across town; when they hear an African-American is getting an charles dickens life advantage in landing a good job or a spot in a good college because of an injustice that they themselves never committed; when they're told that their fears about crime in urban neighborhoods are somehow prejudiced, resentment builds over time. Like the anger within the black community, these resentments aren't always expressed in polite company. Leibniz. But they have helped shape the political landscape for at least a generation. Charles Dickens. Anger over welfare and affirmative action helped forge the Reagan Coalition. Politicians routinely exploited fears of Essay Research and Treatment crime for dickens life, their own electoral ends. Talk show hosts and conservative commentators built entire careers unmasking bogus claims of racism while dismissing legitimate discussions of racial injustice and leibniz, inequality as mere political correctness or reverse racism. Just as black anger often proved counterproductive, so have these white resentments distracted attention from the charles school life real culprits of the middle class squeeze a corporate culture rife with inside dealing, questionable accounting practices and leibniz optimism, short-term greed; a Washington dominated by dickens school lobbyists and special interests; economic policies that favor the few over the many. And yet, to wish away the resentments of essay on artwork white Americans, to label them as misguided or even racist, without recognizing they are grounded in dickens legitimate concerns this too widens the ecological system racial divide and blocks the path to understanding. This is where we are right now.

It's a racial stalemate we've been stuck in for years. Dickens School Life. Contrary to optimism the claims of some of my critics, black and white, I have never been so naive as to believe that we can get beyond our racial divisions in a single election cycle, or with a single candidacy particularly a candidacy as imperfect as my own. But I have asserted a firm conviction a conviction rooted in my faith in God and my faith in the American people that, working together, we can move beyond some of our old racial wounds, and that in fact we have no choice if we are to continue on the path of a more perfect union. For the African-American community, that path means embracing the burdens of our past without becoming victims of our past. It means continuing to insist on a full measure of justice in every aspect of American life. But it also means binding our particular grievances for better health care and better schools and better jobs to the larger aspirations of all Americans: the charles dickens life white woman struggling to break the glass ceiling, the white man who has been laid off, the immigrant trying to feed his family. And it means taking full responsibility for our own lives by demanding more from our fathers, and spending more time with our children, and reading to them, and leibniz, teaching them that while they may face challenges and discrimination in their own lives, they must never succumb to despair or cynicism; they must always believe that they can write their own destiny. Ironically, this quintessentially American and yes, conservative notion of self-help found frequent expression in Reverend Wright's sermons. But what my former pastor too often failed to understand is that embarking on a program of self-help also requires a belief that society can change.

The profound mistake of Reverend Wright's sermons is not that he spoke about charles school racism in our society. It's that he spoke as if our society was static; as if no progress had been made; as if this country a country that has made it possible for one of ecological his own members to run for charles dickens, the highest office in the land and build a coalition of optimism white and black, Latino and Asian, rich and poor, young and old is still irrevocably bound to a tragic past. But what we know what we have seen is charles dickens, that America can change. That is the true genius of this nation. What we have already achieved gives us hope the audacity to hope for what we can and how was electricity, must achieve tomorrow. In the white community, the path to charles school life a more perfect union means acknowledging that what ails the letter African-American community does not just exist in the minds of black people; that the legacy of discrimination and current incidents of discrimination, while less overt than in the past are real and must be addressed, not just with words, but with deeds, by investing in our schools and our communities; by enforcing our civil rights laws and ensuring fairness in our criminal justice system; by providing this generation with ladders of charles dickens life opportunity that were unavailable for Research and Treatment, previous generations.

It requires all Americans to realize that your dreams do not have to come at the expense of my dreams; that investing in the health, welfare and education of black and brown and white children will ultimately help all of America prosper. In the end, then, what is called for is nothing more and nothing less than what all the dickens school life world's great religions demand that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us. Let us be our brother's keeper, scripture tells us. Let us be our sister's keeper. Let us find that common stake we all have in one another, and scarlet, let our politics reflect that spirit as well. For we have a choice in this country. Dickens. We can accept a politics that breeds division and conflict and cynicism.

We can tackle race only as spectacle as we did in the O.J. Essay Cell. trial or in the wake of tragedy as we did in charles dickens the aftermath of Katrina or as fodder for the nightly news. How Was Electricity Invented. We can play Reverend Wright's sermons on every channel, every day and talk about them from now until the election, and charles school life, make the electricity invented only question in dickens this campaign whether or not the American people think that I somehow believe or sympathize with his most offensive words. We can pounce on period some gaffe by dickens school life a Hillary supporter as evidence that she's playing the race card, or we can speculate on whether white men will all flock to John McCain in the general election regardless of his policies. But if we do, I can tell you that in the next election, we'll be talking about some other distraction. And then another one. And then another one. And nothing will change. That is one option. Or, at on artwork, this moment, in this election, we can come together and say, Not this time. Charles School Life. This time, we want to talk about the crumbling schools that are stealing the future of black children and white children and Asian children and period, Hispanic children and Native American children. This time, we want to reject the charles dickens school life cynicism that tells us that these kids can't learn; that those kids who don't look like us are somebody else's problem.

The children of America are not those kids, they are our kids, and we will not let them fall behind in a 21st century economy. Not this time. This time we want to talk about how the lines in the emergency room are filled with whites and blacks and Hispanics who do not have health care, who don't have the power on their own to overcome the special interests in Washington, but who can take them on if we do it together. This time, we want to Essay Stem Research and Treatment talk about the shuttered mills that once provided a decent life for men and women of school life every race, and optimism, the homes for sale that once belonged to Americans from every religion, every region, every walk of life. This time, we want to talk about the fact that the real problem is not that someone who doesn't look like you might take your job; it's that the charles corporation you work for will ship it overseas for nothing more than a profit. This time, we want to talk about the men and women of every color and creed who serve together and fight together and bleed together under the same proud flag. We want to talk about how to bring them home from a war that should have never been authorized and should have never been waged. And we want to talk about how we'll show our patriotism by caring for ecological system, them and their families, and giving them the benefits that they have earned.

I would not be running for charles, President if I didn't believe with all my heart that this is what the vast majority of Americans want for this country. This union may never be perfect, but generation after generation has shown that it can always be perfected. And today, whenever I find myself feeling doubtful or cynical about system this possibility, what gives me the most hope is the next generation the young people whose attitudes and beliefs and openness to change have already made history in this election. There is one story in particularly that I'd like to leave you with today a story I told when I had the great honor of speaking on Dr. King's birthday at life, his home church, Ebenezer Baptist, in Atlanta.

There is about Stem and Treatment, a young, 23-year-old white woman named Ashley Baia who organized for our campaign in charles dickens life Florence, S.C. She had been working to organize a mostly African-American community since the beginning of this campaign, and one day she was at a roundtable discussion where everyone went around telling their story and why they were there. And Ashley said that when she was 9 years old, her mother got cancer. And because she had to miss days of work, she was let go and lost her health care. They had to electricity file for bankruptcy, and that's when Ashley decided that she had to do something to help her mom. She knew that food was one of charles their most expensive costs, and so Ashley convinced her mother that what she really liked and really wanted to eat more than anything else was mustard and system, relish sandwiches because that was the cheapest way to eat. Charles. That's the mind of a 9-year-old. She did this for a year until her mom got better. So she told everyone at ecological system, the roundtable that the reason she joined our campaign was so that she could help the millions of other children in the country who want and need to help their parents, too. Now, Ashley might have made a different choice. Charles. Perhaps somebody told her along the way that the source of her mother's problems were blacks who were on optimism welfare and too lazy to dickens school work, or Hispanics who were coming into the country illegally.

But she didn't. Leibniz. She sought out allies in her fight against injustice. Anyway, Ashley finishes her story and then goes around the school life room and time period, asks everyone else why they're supporting the campaign. Charles Life. They all have different stories and different reasons. Many bring up a specific issue. And finally they come to this elderly black man who's been sitting there quietly the entire time. And Ashley asks him why he's there. Scarlet Letter Time Period. And he does not bring up a specific issue. Charles Dickens Life. He does not say health care or the economy.

He does not say education or the war. He does not say that he was there because of Barack Obama. He simply says to everyone in ecological the room, I am here because of Ashley. I'm here because of charles dickens Ashley. By itself, that single moment of recognition between that young white girl and that old black man is not enough.

It is not enough to give health care to the sick, or jobs to the jobless, or education to our children. But it is where we start. It is where our union grows stronger. And as so many generations have come to realize over the course of the 221 years since a band of patriots signed that document right here in Philadelphia, that is where the perfection begins.

Essay: Speech Disorder Vocal Folds. Vocal Pathologies arise due to accident, disease, misuse of the voice, or surgery affecting the vocal folds and have a profound impact on patients life. The modeling of normal and pathological voice source and the analysis of dickens school life, healthy and pathological voices has gained increasing interest recently. Leibniz. Among the most interesting works are those concerned with Parkinsons disease (PD) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS), which belong to a class of neurodegenerative diseases that affect patients speech. Most voice-related pathologies are due to irregular masses or the presence of pathologies in the larynx such as vocal fold nodules or vocal fold polyps located on school, the vocal folds interfering in their normal and Effect on Memory regular vibration.

This phenomenon causes a decrease in voice quality, that is, usually the first symptom of this type of disorders. In the past, the charles dickens school life only way to measure voice quality was by applying perceptual measurements denoting the existence or absence of several voice characteristics [26]. To analyze the speech signal in order to estimate numerous parameters that indicate amplitude and frequency perturbations, the level of air leakage, the about Stem degree of turbulence, and so forth. Voice production starts with the vibration of the vocal folds, which can be more or less stretched to dickens life achieve higher or lower pitch tones. In normal conditions and in spite of leibniz, this pitch variation ability, phonation is considered stabilized and regular. Charles Dickens. Any transformation on the vocal folds tissue can cause an A Stroke’s Effect, irregular, nonperiodic vibration which will change the shape of the glottal source signal from one period to school the next, introducing jitter [7]. The same problem can occur in amplitude. If, for instance, the vocal folds are too stiff, they will need a higher sub glottal pressure to vibrate. The glottal cycle can thus be irregularly disturbed also in A Stroke’s Effect Essay amplitude, originating shimmer. The possible existence of high frequency noise, especially during the closed phase of the glottal cycle, originated by a partial closure of the charles dickens vocal folds will cause an air leakage through the glottis, providing a turbulence effect. All these phenomena affect the glottal source signal, but there is no direct access possible to how was invented this signal, the access is only available to the sound pressure radiated at the lips.

The estimation of the glottal source signal from the charles school life voice signal is not a simple task. Essay On Artwork. Research in this field shows that it is charles school life reasonable to period approximate the influence of the vocal tract by a linear filter. Charles Dickens School. Using this approximation, the voice signal can be filtered by inverse of this filter to obtain an estimate of the optimism glottal source signal [11]. In this work a non-interactive approach is taken without consideration of the influence of the dickens school supraglottis vocal tract or the influence of the sub glottis cavities on the glottal flow. As a consequence, it is assumed that the source and filter parameters are independent. Details of the vocal tract and how was the utterances with respect to different articulators are indicated below. Figure 7.1 Vocal Tract indicating Place of charles dickens school life, different categories of Speech Production. 7.2 Frequency Perturbation-

Fundamental frequency has been shown to reflect the vocal fold status and Essay Cell Research how the variables interact and perform. Fundamental frequency is defined as follows. The vocal fundamental frequency is reflective of the biomechanical characteristics of the dickens vocal folds as they interact with sub glottal pressure. The biomechanical properties are determined by laryngeal structure and applied muscle forces. Adjustment of the latter, in turn, is a function of electricity invented, reflective, affective and learned voluntary behaviors. The small cycle-to-cycle changes in frequency are represented by frequency perturbations or what is charles dickens life called jitter. The estimation of irregularities in the vibration of the vocal folds is commonly measured by the jitter parameter. Jitter measures the irregularities in a quasi-periodic signal and invented can account for variations in one or more of its features, like period, amplitude, shape, and charles so forth [7].

Even a sustained vowel produced by a professional speaker cannot be considered as a periodic signal. Hence, the jitter of a voiced speech signal is usually taken as a measure of the change in the duration of consecutive glottal cycles. Jitter the instability of vocal fold vibration represents a reflection of biomechanical and leibniz optimism neuromuscular control. Perturbation values can vary in dickens several ways. Variations of pitch perturbation are inversely proportional to how was electricity the frequency, for example when fundamental frequency increases, jitter decreases. Variations of charles dickens, pitch perturbation is about and Treatment expected to change in relation to the degree of tension present in the vocal folds, where high tension reflects lower perturbation values and low tension reflects higher perturbation values. Vocal intensity and speech samples used have shown to affect perturbations.

The effects of intensity on jitter values are as follows. The higher jitter ratios were related to low pitch and intensity of sustained vowels. It is found that pitch perturbation measures were more useful than amplitude perturbation measures. The use of dickens, perturbation measures in sustained phonation to detect laryngeal pathologies is more valuable when combined with amplitude perturbation measures. Leibniz. Amplitude perturbation measures could increase the charles dickens life accuracy of targeting vocal pathologies. The greater the force, the greater is the essay amplitude of charles dickens school, a sound wave. Intensity is an Stem Cell Research and Treatment, objective measure of sound loudness and it is the amount of force per unit of area. As pressure changes the perception of school, loudness also changes. Changes of scarlet time, frequency can affect perceptions of dickens life, loudness. The Vocal intensity is dependent on an interaction of leibniz optimism, sub glottal pressure and the adjustment status and aerodynamics at the level of the vocal folds, as well as vocal tract status. Changes in fundamental frequency can affect maximum and minimum vocal intensities.

The speakers raise their fundamental frequency when asked to speak louder. Reduced vocal intensity can also be an identifying factor to some speech disorders, especially those involving the central nervous system. Charles School. Values of amplitude perturbation or shimmer are similar to jitter values. Shimmer measures the Essay about cycle-to-cycle variations of the vocal signal. Amplitude perturbation also analyzes the short-term variability of the vocal signal .Amplitude perturbation measures are based on the maximal peak amplitude of charles life, each cycle measured in mill volts or millimeters. That the forces of vocal fold tension, mass, length and subglottic pressures can affect shimmer as well as jitter scores. Essay. Shimmer is also better analyzed in prolongations of single sounds rather than in spontaneous or connected speech. Connected speech contains instances of silences, its intensity is variable between syllables as well as in dickens life word stress, and each phoneme has its own acoustic pattern. [9] The vocal folds are driven by letter time period the cranial nerves originating within this system. If the dickens school cranial nerves which innervate speech articulators are destroyed or damaged, then the transmission to the vocal folds will be disrupted. This subsequently may cause changes in the vocal fold vibratory pattern.

It happens in case of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) subjects. Jitter and shimmer values represent the small cycle-to-cycle changes during vocal fold oscillations. It would seem logical that there would be significant changes reflected in leibniz optimism the jitter and shimmer measures, since the vocal folds play an active role in speech production. Speech portion of large duration 10ms is used to calculate frequency, jitter and shimmer. School Life. The pathological subjects have higher jitter values than the normal subjects for utterances. Vocal Tract Model. The vocal tract is responsible for changing the spectral balance of the glottal source signal. By changing the vocal tract shape the speaker can modify its resonance frequencies to produce a wide variety of different sounds.

Humans use the evolution in time of the resonance frequencies to produce speech. The glottal source signal is further modified by the vocal tract filter. The contribution of the vocal tract resonances can be removed from the speech signal by system inverse filtering. Noise to Harmonic Ratio (NHR) is another useful measure of hoarseness. For a signal that can be assumed to be periodic (e.g. a sustained vowel), the charles dickens signal-to-noise ratio will be equal to the harmonics-to-noise ratio (HNR).

Praat declares that a healthy voice phonating /a/ or /i/ should have an HNR of essay, 20, and 40 for school, the phonation of the vowel /u/. Leibniz Optimism. The pathological subjects have lower HNR values than the normal subjects for utterances and charles school life hence the intelligibility of vowels or consonants produced by them is very low. Formant Frequency Analysis. In real time continuous speech, even the sustained vowel phonation consists of some random part mainly due to turbulence of airflow through the glottis (anterior and/or posterior glottis) and due to pitch perturbations. During the vowels pronunciation, the value of leibniz optimism, first formant (F1) can be found in range from 250Hz to 1000Hz. When the charles dickens life tongue is closer to the hard palate the value of about Stem Research, F1 is lower.

The value of the second formant (F2) can vary from 550 Hz up to 2700 Hz and it depends on front and charles dickens back position of the tongue. Leibniz. The lower value for F2 can be achieved by rounding the dickens school lips [4]. Third formant (F3) is important for quality and clarity of pronounced phoneme. 7.3 System Implementation. The system implemented for vocal folds Speech disorder is described below. The present work attempts to find few parameters from essay, pathological speech for confirmation of school life, Vocal Folds disorder. Researchers have used lot many parameters. Stem Research And Treatment. We try to reduce the dickens life computational cost and reduce the number of parameters. The present work is based on study of children and some adult male and female subjects speaking with Marathi as their mother tongue. The speech data of normal subjects/children and pathological subjects/children of the same age group between 3 to 10 years is collected. The children were trained to utter similar words before recording.

The speech data of normal adult male and female subjects and pathological adult male and on artwork female subjects of the same age group between 20 to 50 years is collected. The standard database is not available. The speech data of 11Vocal Folds disordered speakers comprising of charles dickens school life, above 100 words uttered by each subject are collected. The speech database consists of isolated words, connected words, fast uttered sentences and how was electricity invented songs for e.g. Charles Dickens. Prarthana-School-Prayer, National anthem and Pledge ,Nursery Rhymes ,famous film songs etc.

The speech data was recorded using Sony Intelligent Portable Ocular Device (IPOD) and recording facility in COLEA freeware in digital form. About Stem Cell And Treatment. The recording was carried out in school life a pleasant atmosphere and maintaining the children and other subjects in tension-stress free environment. The recorded signal is transformed into .wav file by Stem using GOLDWAVE software. The data was collected at ChetanaVikasMandir, a special school established to educate Mentally Retarded children as well as children with various disorders. It is located at Kolhapur, India. Charles Dickens School Life. The data is also collected from the patients under the treatment of optimism, speech therapists and charles dickens school life ENT specialists in Kolhapur city. We got the database labelled by consulting the doctors as Vocal Folds disorder speech data. 7.3.3 Evaluation of Speech. The present work attempts to confirm the Vocal Folds disorder from the speech signal by extracting only scarlet period important segmental and charles dickens school life supra segmental acoustic indices. The important indices are considered as Diagnostic Markers are as follows. 1. Evaluation of Fundamental frequency fo, Jitter, Shimmer, and HNR for on artwork, the analysis of school life, harshness and breathiness in the voice to how was electricity be done in the Training Phase to confirm the speech as of pathological speech category.

Evaluation of Voice Regularity for the analysis of overall motor control during speech production activity. This is done with reference to the parameter threshold ranges specified in Table 4.1. 2. Fundamental Frequency Analysis- The fo mean value lies in the high range between 180 Hz to charles school life 440 Hz for adult male female speakers and A Stroke’s example children. 3. Glottal frequency variations the source frequency fo variations with respect to % percentile values from 0% to 100%. The Linear or nonlinear nature of the charles school life characteristics is important. Stem Cell. The Vocal Folds disorder is confirmed by low gradient index in charles dickens life 0% to how was invented 50% fo percentile range and high gradient index and nonlinear nature of the characteristics in dickens life 50% to 100 % fo percentile range. 4. % Close Quotient (CQ) graph simulates the Laryngograph and system indicates the close phase of Glottis pulse signal or vocal folds vibrational cycle. The mean CQ, range of variation of CQ and CQ variations with respect to dickens total time duration of speech sample are important parameters. 5. All Tx graph indicates histogram of all pitch cycles for the total time duration of speech sample.

Regular Tx graph indicates the histogram of the regular pitch periods which vary within +/- 10% with respect to the adjacent pitch periods. The similarity between the two graphs and the mean fo value of the electricity invented person are important parameters. 7.4 System Block Schematic Diagram of the charles school life system implemented for evaluation of Vocal Folds disorder is as shown in essay Figure 7.2 below. The present work attempts to confirm the charles dickens school life Vocal Folds disorder from the speech signal by extracting various segmental and supra segmental acoustic indices. Essay On Artwork. The important indices are considered as Diagnostic Markers.

The acoustic indices are evaluated for all isolated word and SFS tool generates Ls signal from the charles dickens school input speech data, which is compatible to Laryngograph signal which is not accessible to us. The SFS tool provides the Qx a histogram of the closed quotient values found in the recording. The closed quotient is an estimate of the percentage time the vocal folds remained closed in letter time each pitch period. Charles Dickens School Life. It is A Stroke’s Effect on Memory Essay example found from the charles dickens school Laryngograph signal. The SFS tool provides the Dx1 a histogram of all the pitch periods found in the recording, distributed according to their fundamental frequency, Dx2 a histogram of all the regular pitch periods found in leibniz the recording, distributed according to their fundamental frequency. Charles School. A pitch period is defined as regular if it deviates in duration by no more than 10% from the period before or after it. Using the acoustic indices the relationship between the Electroglottograph (EGG) measures and the physical movements of the vocal folds is expressed as ratios between the temporal measures of open phase of vocal fold movement with closed phase and also between different phases of leibniz, movement with the full glottal period continuous sentence type speech data samples (above 100 words by each subject) uttered by every pathological and normal subject. The ready to use softwares are used for the development phase .We have used the developmental tool Praat to verify the intensity, pitch , the formant frequencies f1 , f2 ,f3 and school HNR calculated by us using our MATLAB code for the speech samples. We have used the developmental tool SFS to extract the parameters voice regularity, Jitter, Shimmer, fo mean mode values. The Laryngeal Quality Analysis, Glottis Pulse Analysis is scarlet performed by using SFS software. SFS reports indicate exactly similar all Tx and regular Tx glottis pulse graphs in charles life case of normal subjects where as for pathological subjects the essay regular Tx pulses produced are very low, insufficient in charles life time domain as well as variable in frequency domain . 7.5 System Development. The system is developed using two modes training mode and testing mode.

Training Mode- In training mode 50 speech samples are used to train the system. Stem Cell Research. The Laryngograph comprising of % Close Quotient (CQ) with respect to charles dickens school life time indicative of the close phase of Glottis pulse signal or vocal folds vibrational cycle and the comparison of histograms of all Tx which is all pitch periods with respect to regular Tx pitch periods are plotted for these 50 speech samples to confirm Vocal Folds disordercharacteristics. The observations for Tx are as follows. 1. A pitch period is defined as regular if it deviates in duration by no more than 10% from the period before or after it. 2. In case of normal persons, regular Tx graph matches with all Tx graph. 3. For Vocal Fold disordered persons, regular Tx contains almost 50 % of frequency range as compared to all Tx. Glottal Frequency F0 variation is found for normal as well as pathological speech.

It is evaluated in transformed percentile domain. The fo values for a speech data file are calculated by using Framing and essay Windowing Algorithm in MATLAB. Then the Normalization routine is life developed in Microsoft Excel. The algorithm for on artwork, evaluation of Normalized fo Variation in Percentile Domain is as follows. 1. The % percentile value of dickens life, f0 maximum level is A Stroke’s Essay considered to be 100% percentile. 2. Hence according to the data values of f0 variations as per the speech sample 0%-5%-10%-15%95%-100% percentile values of every speech sample are calculated. 3. The f0 frequency variations are plotted with respect to % percentile values. Dickens School Life. This graph provides a very good measure of fundamental frequency analysis to differentiate between normal speech and pathological speech .It also confirms Vocal Folds disorder. The graph is linear for certain range with high or low gradient and it exhibits curved nature in the other range of fo for Vocal Folds disorderedspeakers. For normal speech % percentile fo track graphs are linear from A Stroke’s, 5% to 95 % range with very low gradient 0.05 to 0.3. The observations for CQ are as follows.

1. CQ is dickens life a time Vs CQ graph. It indicates that the CQ values are present in the range 15 % to 75 % for Vocal Folds disordered speakers. For normal speech, CQ variation is observed in the range 15 % to 60 % The observations for leibniz optimism, Regular Tx pulses are as follows. 1. % Regular Tx pulses is dickens less than 20 % or even negligible of the frequency spectrum as compared to all indicating loss of regular pitch periods. 7.6 Graphs of some of the Diagnostic Markers-

7.7 System Developed for correction We have used MATLAB based open source developmental tool E-System compatible with SFS developmental software for trying methods for correcting Vocal Folds disordered speech. The developmental tool COLEA and Adobe Audition are used for preprocessing the life speech samples. In preprocessing the silence zone or the invented audible breathing voice segments are removed. Using E-System following processing blocks can be designed. Amplifier /Attenuator Design specifications are gain and Bandwidth. Low Pass Filter- Design specifications are Cut off Frequency. High Pass Filter- Design specifications are Cut off Frequency. Band Pass Filter- Design specifications are lower and upper Cut off Frequency. Band Stop Filter- Design specifications are lower and charles dickens school upper Cut off Frequency.

Vocal Tract Filter- Design specifications are f1,f2 and f3 formant Frequencies. Resonator- Design specifications are Resonating Frequency and Bandwidth. The system applied for correction is developed with the help of following filters. Band Pass Filter- The lower cut off frequency is in essay the range 10 Hz to 100 Hz and school the upper cut off frequency selected should be such that the A Stroke’s Effect example second formant frequency f2 should lie in the pass band. Hence it is selected as 1500 Hz, 2000 Hz or 2500 Hz as per male, female or children based on pitch frequency range. Resonator The resonating center frequency selected should be such that the second formant frequency f2 should lie in the pass band. Hence it is selected as 1500 Hz, 2000 Hz or 2500 Hz as per male, female or children based on pitch frequency range. Vocal Tract Filter It is dickens life realized as a cascaded combination of three resonators acting as per invented, three formant frequencies. The standard adult male formant frequencies are 500 Hz, 1500Hz, and 2500 Hz. The first formant frequency is amplified by 20 dB, the second formant frequency is amplified by 10 dB and the third formant frequency is charles dickens life maintained at ecological 0 dB.

Hence this filter boosts up the input speech signal spectrum as per charles dickens life, the formant frequencies. In case of ecological system, pathological speech the amplitudes of upper formants are degraded .Hence the VTF is the better solution to lift up the charles school life second formant spectrum. 7.7.1 System Applied for scarlet period, Correction of Vocal Folds disorder. The performance of Band Pass Filter was found to be better in comparison with Vocal Tract Filter and Resonator Filter during the Training mode. Hence the BPF is applied for dickens school life, correction of Vocal Folds disorder speech. The BPF is designed with upper cut off frequency such that the second formant frequency f2 should lie in the pass band. Hence it is selected as 1500 Hz, 2000 Hz or 2500 Hz as per male, female or children based on about Stem Cell Research, pitch frequency range. After applying the dickens school BPF to Vocal Folds disorder the following observations are made. 5. It is Essay Stem observed that Laryngograph comprising of regular Tx pulses graph shows improvement and contains more than 50 % of the frequency spectrum as compared to all Tx.

6. Time Vs closed quotient graph indicates closed quotient range more than 50 % wide with mean %CQ within 42% to 48%. 7. School. F0 track has a low gradient (slope)- In 10% to ecological system 50% percentile range 0.17 to 0.24 and a high gradient (slope) in 55% to 100% percentile range 0.55 to 1.94 .The nonlinear curved section is improved and converted to approximately linear with comparatively low gradient levels. Improvement in the diagnostic markers due to application of school, BPF Filter is indicated below with the help of Regular Tx graph, % Close Quotient (CQ) graph and % percentile fo track graphs. Diagnostic Markers-dudh 1BPF.wav. Figure 7.6a1. % Regular Glottal Pulses-dudh1 BPF processed. Figure 7.6a2. % Regular Glottal Pulses-dudh1 Original. Figure 7.7b. % Close Quotient wrt Time dudh1 BPF Processed. Figure 7.7b. % Close Quotient wrt Time dudh1 Original. The % CQ graph lies within 20 to 75% range in Original where as it lies in 15% to essay on artwork 60 % range in BPF processed. Figure7.5c1. % Percentile fo track variations dudh1 Original.

Figure7.5c2. % Percentile fo track variations dudh1 BPF Processed. Original% percentile fo track indicates linear graph from 5% to 50% percentile range 0.077 low gradient indexes. Figure7.7. Comparative Response of the how was electricity Correction System for Vocal Folds Disorder.

It is evident from the graph that the BPF is better than Resonator and charles life VTF. The BPF processed graph extends linear range till 85% fo and further reduces the gradient of both the sections. Hence it is preferred as Correction System. 7.8Segmental and Supra segmental Acoustic indices Analysis. The analysis of segmental and supra segmental acoustic indices was carried out for Effect Essay, particular isolated words and continuous speech data. The isolated word data above 100 words uttered by each of charles school life, 25 normal subjects and12 Vocal Fold disabled subjects were analyzed and ecological reference /threshold level was considered for each isolated word. Various Misarticulation cases were analyzed in case of pathological subjects. The spectrograms were studied for Formant analysis. Fast uttered words or continuous sentences exhibit greater complexities with respect to speech intelligibility. Considering the charles school observations for % CQ variation, Tx variation and F0 track variation observations the system is designed for confirmation of Vocal Folds Disorder. Ecological. Results for training system are shown in Table 7.1.

The pathological speech due to ecological system vocal folds disorder suffers from following conditions.

Breathing voice segments are audible in speech because the subjects are under stress when they speak .When the speakers are supposed to charles dickens take pause in essay on artwork between utterances of two successive words generally the breathing voice segment is charles life heard. The minimum intensity level does not drop much as there is no silence region due to the presence of breathing voice segments. The speakers have to put more efforts for Stem and Treatment, the motor movements of articulators .Hence the utterances of different words is dickens school not appropriate. Due to low HNR levels below the pathological threshold of 12 dB the speech indicates harshness. The formants f1, f2, f3 are seen to be spread in letter time period case of pathological speech with respect to normal speech. As a result the vowels and consonants produced are either weak or inappropriate. 7.10 Our Contribution to present work. The Vocal Folds disordered speech database is not available. We got the database labeled by the doctors .We have evaluated and analyzed the speech of the Vocal Folds disorder people with the help of few segmental an supra segmental acoustic indices like fo mean , Percentile glottal frequency fo track Characteristics, Laryngeal Quality represented by % Close Quotient characteristics , All Tx-Regular Tx time-frequency Histogram and % voice Regularity.

Evaluation and confirmation of Vocal Folds disordered speech using the present theory is school life done for the first time by us and it is not done by ecological system any one before. 7.11 Concluding Remarks. The Vocal Folds disorder can be identified by school life evaluation of speech of 25 normal and 12 pathological subjects .Out of 12 pathological subjects 11 were confirmed to be vocal folds disabled persons .The disorder can be evaluated on the basis of following segmental and supra segmental acoustic indices. The speakers exhibit variability in different acoustical indices from time to Stem Research time. The range of % Voice Regularity is observed to be 15% to 40%.

The range of % CQ Mean is observed to be 25% to 49 % with standard deviation of 13% to 20 %. The % of regular Tx pulses is very low with respect to all Tx pulses. The glottal pulses exist relatively only for 20 to 50 % of time duration of school, speech data and are effectively present in particular frequency range in 140 Hz to system 300 Hz. Charles School Life. The glottal pulses cannot be produced by the disabled speakers in low frequency range and in400 Hz to 600 Hz spectrum.. Percentile glottal frequency characteristics are Linear with low gradient up to 50 % percentile fo and Nonlinear curved with very high gradient up to 100% percentile fo. In some cases Nonlinear with very high gradient. The minimum intensity levels attained are in the range 28 dB to 40 dB because of breathing voice segments present consistently.
