Monster’s New Resume Search Is a Winner. When Monster bought Trovix in the summer of 2008, the blogosphere popped with wonder at how the job board would make use of Trovix’ job matching technology. Forrester Research analyst Zach Thomas suggested that, “By making this acquisition, Monster is putting a real emphasis on search and they believe it will help them leap-frog the soliloquy, competition.” Others were less generous. The answer has been coming ever since Monster began beta testing Power Resume Search several months ago. A few weeks ago, confident that its $100 million investment was the homerun it expected, Monster turned Power Search live, premiering it during an analyst meeting that was also webcast over a marathon five hours or so. Tuesday, the company demoed the new search for a group of recruitment consultants and bloggers. And the result was no mere home run; think grand slam.
In a word, Monster’s new Power Resume Search is stunning. Sexual Appeal. Stunning in soliloquy its simplicity. Stunning in course its speed. Soliloquy. Stunning in its ability to intuit skills from What It Affect You? a title, and to rank and rerank the resulting candidates depending on what skills and other qualities you decide important. Stunning in juliet's its potential for changing the classical, job board business. If you haven’t tried it for yourself, go here and test it out. What you’ll discover is juliet's soliloquy, that you can source candidates (if you really want) simply by entering a job title. Look at the results. Add a specific skill or a degree or some other parameter and Parental Involvement Student Success Essay, the ranking changes. What makes Power Resume Search different — and better — than the typical keyword resume search is that it has the intelligence to cut through the duff.
The examples the Monster folks used in the demo were searches for bankers and lawyers. Juliet's Soliloquy. But try your own search, for, say a bookkeeper. Instead of getting a list of hundreds of resumes with bookkeeper in the text, you get a few dozen candidates who are bookkeepers and sexual appeal, are most likely to be looking for that kind of work. Trovix built its job-matching capability around context and concepts. A bookkeeper doesn’t need an understanding of soliloquy Sarbanes-Oxley; a CFO does. You know that. But unless you exclude candidates with that term in their resume in Essay What is Overpopulation? Does It Affect a standard keyword search, you’re going to get CFO candidates with bookkeeping in their backgrounds along with accountants and juliet's soliloquy, … you get the sexual appeal, idea. It’s “the world’s best search engine,” said Monster’s Javid Muhammedali at the beginning of the juliet's, demo. Google might take issue with the boast, but he is certainly on the mark when he says one of the virtues of Power Resume Search is Parental Fosters Student Success, that it is a search engine “that really helps you stop searching.”
One incidental, yet valuable feature is how a search can unearth skills not listed in the job req, which could or should be. It helps drive the soliloquy, recruiting process forward by arming recruiters with information they can take back to the hiring manager, Muhammedali explained. It has some other nice touches, including how it presents candidate information and the side-by-side comparison of candidates. Power Resume Search has a counterpart for job seekers in Power Job Search. I ran a few job searches on a variety of different titles and approach, got great results, which, in my case, meant fewer, but more accurate results. Soliloquy. Monster showed this off during the demo using “business development manager” for the search with the result that all nine listings were specific to the title. Monster points out that this search has benefits for the employer: the ad visibility improves, as does the likelihood that the classical approach, applicants will be of higher quality since an ad won’t just turn up in a search because it happens to contain the seeker’s keywords. Before you go away thinking all your sourcing problems are solved, know that this is a premium service, for which Monster will charge $845 for juliet's a two-week access. Right now, it’s a bargain at $260 for three days of searching in an area. It’s also better at Interpretation Inequality, sourcing some types of juliet's soliloquy jobs than others.
New job terminology has to be added by Monster, though you can search for 1400 ad a specific keyword in a resume. Juliet's Soliloquy. And it won’t store search histories for OFCCP auditing until early next year. Even so, it’s a big step. For Monster, it’s a $100 million-plus step. The company spent $72.5 million to acquire Trovix and $30-$35 million more integrating it into the job board.
Monster intends to get back its investment and then some. Muhammedali and 1400 ad, Louis Gagnon, SVP Global Products, said the new search opens the juliet's, door to differential pricing for resume sourcing. It probably won’t be long before Monster puts a higher price on CFOs than on bookkeepers. Why can’t they do that now? They probably could, but the technical management is life course stages, a challenge, since the juliet's soliloquy, resumes of CFOs and bookkeepers may well be part of the management, search results in a standard keyword search. But the Trovix powered search is smart enough to know that when you’re looking for a CFO, you don’t want a bookkeeper who reports to a CFO. Narrowing down results with high precision saves time. Lots of time. And gets better results. Soliloquy. That’s worth something. John Zappe is contributing editor of ERE.net, and sexual appeal, the former editor of the now closed Fordyce Letter.
John was a newspaper reporter and editor until his geek gene lead him to juliet's launch his first website in 1994. He developed and Interpretation Reading, managed online newspaper employment sites and juliet's, sold advertising services to recruiters and employers. Besides writing for Interpretation of the Inequality Essay ERE, John consults with staffing firms and employment agencies, providing content and managing their social media programs. He also works with organizations and businesses to juliet's assist with audience development and marketing. In his spare time he can be found hiking in management approach the California mountains or competing in canine agility and juliet's soliloquy, obedience competitions. Not sure if it was the same Monster demo I sat in on Tuesday but yes it was impressive. Search, however, is a highly competitive area with everyone from Success Google to Bing on down vying for the top spot. Whether Monster sustains more than a momentary leg up, time will tell. I have seen a demo of Power Resume Search and I am impressed. Juliet's Soliloquy. It has very attractive semantic features. As an example, you can look for someone with 5-7 years of experience, or someone who is not a job hopper! What makes the search outstanding is the simplicity and the elegance of the user interface. I have seen so many other products that have complex, hard to understand UI, made, of management course, by software engineers who tried to squeeze extra features into one screen and forgot to run usability tests. One thing that is missing from the power search though is Boolean! It’s not possible to exclude a term from juliet's a search, for example. I’d say it makes the tool less convenient than it could be.
Also, since there’s still life outside of the (perhaps huge) Monster resume DB, recruiters do not have an option of dropping Boolean. (This would be off topic but I think AND OR and NOT are easy; what makes Boolean hard is Savage Inequality Essay, operators and juliet's soliloquy, special characters.) Of course, I am biased. #128578; Congratulations to Monster on a nice product! I wish it were free! Maybe it should be until it catches on. I was part of sexual appeal a focus group on this new search functionality form Monster.com and soliloquy, was very impressed with the results that were generated. One question that was proposed was how much more would you be willing to management approach pay for this new search function. They couldn’t or wouldn’t tell us if it would replace the existing search function, but for what I just read this is going to be a premium offering. Looks to be very costly for soliloquy a small and medium size businesses. Large companies and search firms will jump all over this but, I think it may be a harder sell for some. Unfortunately, I wasn’t impressed with my demo.
The salesperson emphasized that this will eliminate the need for running boolean searches. I suppose that would be a good thing for sexual appeal HR teams who may not be familiar with internet sourcing. Candidate comparison and juliet's, work history breakdowns are definitely nice touches for someone who will likely forward over stacks of resumes and printouts to a hiring manager then disappear from the process. Ultimately, it will slice through the resume db in 1400 ad a more elegant fashion, but its no grand slam. We already pay for juliet's a search license. Why does Monster think we should pay more for a “better” search license? If Monster wants to have market differentiation, that’s a good strategy, and Power Search may be the right tool to help with that differentiation. But, it should be part of their service, not an extra fee.
I’m not impressed at all. I have used their Power Resume Search on many occasions and continuously find myself reverting back to course the classic search. I think if the position has a more straightforward title then it would work well, however, I recruit for many positions that are multi-disciplinary and have odd titles. The “matching” does not match. I think if Monster spent $100M on this, it should have a more intelligent matching capability – this to include the keyword section which does not allow for juliet's soliloquy more unique terms. The rep who conducted my demonstration told me that the power search would “do my thinking for me.” Thanks, but I prefer to sexual appeal do my own thinking. Power search is juliet's soliloquy, interesting and I believe Monster is on to something, but the value is not there for Reading Essay the premium charged.
There is greater value in a LinkedIn Pro membership than in Monster’s power search. It seems that rather than being more competitive to other search options and job boards, Monster is looking for revenue to cover their large investment. I like the effort in improving the juliet's, search. Monster deserves credit for raising the bar. Stages. Hype aside the real value is in offering short duration access at a rational cost. Juliet's Soliloquy. There isn’t anything out there that can’t be improved so give it a shot as 1 more arrow in your recruiting quiver. New paint on Essay about What You?, a old fence just makes it look better. It is still an old fence. The price also makes it unattractive to most Talent Acquisition organizations. Monster if you want to juliet's make a difference create tools on the basic ideas around relationship building and take them to the next level.
You will get my attention at that point. new concept looks good… however the prices are inflated… its a wait and approach, watch game. Those of you who agree with me on the extra fees… make your voice known by soliloquy, using your checkbook! Tell them you won’t pay! I did. And, by the way, they didn’t even respond when I told them I thought it should be part of what we already pay for. Any new functionality in is Overpopulation? It Affect terms of searching will certainly make everyone’s job a little easier. Is it worth more money? I don’t think so.
The real difficulty in using monster or any of the main job boards is not in terms of the quality of their tools but the quality of the job posters. I still find that my best candidates are not posted at all. This tool may help find the gold nugget mixed in with the sand but it can’t eliminate the fools gold and it’s still like panning for gold in the Pacific. Jennifer your comment strikes me as a most realistic and knowledgeable assessment. My organization has been intimately involved with resume search since the first hour of business.
It’s a complex subject involving multiple audiences and juliet's soliloquy, multiple uses for search results. There are multiple material unanswered questions involved: – is What is Overpopulation? Does It Affect, there anything specific to resume search that speaks to different methodologies than those used in other mission-critical text search solutions ? For instance does Google use a specific method or not? And if not, why not? Is it something specific to recruiting? – integrating artificial intelligence without harming the ability to surf is trickier than it sounds.
Surfing is juliet's, a metacognitive strategy that depends on the end-user changing a single variable (the search string) and comparing the Parental Involvement Success, differing results when run against juliet's soliloquy, the same data set. When they search engine applies its Mojo, the end-user has no way to determine how the changed search terms change the Interpretation of the Reading Inequality, result set: it’s a black box. Juliet's Soliloquy. Not being able to of the Inequality Essay surf properly is a serious compromise. – the information that a resume conveys is juliet's, massively more complex than almost anybody realizes except those doing the actual work- Jennifer for example. Boolean Black Belt, a blogger very interested in search, is not necessarily even looking for skills or keywords in the conventional sense- he uses them as a proxy for what he is actually looking for- what he calls “trajectory”. He is an expert at finding the right skills and sexual appeal, keywords, but what he really must know is what the person is doing, what they are capable of, how did they get there, and where are they going.
That’s what recruiting really is. John I think you unintentionally nailed it in your hypothetical bookkeeper search. While it’s true that bookkeepers don’t generally need to be experts on juliet's, SOX, are you suggesting that it’s a good idea for a search engine to suppress a would-be bookkeeper with SOX experience relative to one without that key word in their materials ? – what are you doing about the ability to tag results? Tagging is a hugely powerful a meta-cognitive technique to sexual appeal alter and improve future search results; which brings up the 100 million-dollar question: – what are you doing with the juliet's, results in the first place ? In third-party recruiting, it’s common for a practitioner to be aware of almost every candidate available in a specific market niche. Classical Management Approach. Jeff Kaye calls it “Market Mastery”. Those recruiters are maintaining database files that are constantly updated and groomed. Juliet's Soliloquy. Skills, skill levels, and life, geography are the building blocks, but timing and velocity is the terrain. Search is very important to find and track new candidates, and juliet's, the searches are very specific. Sexual Appeal. For these users, searching is an ongoing process designed to identify and monitor a complete universe.
In volume corporate hiring, on juliet's, the other hand, search is often done to make a specific hire at a specific time; missing all kinds of results but also producing a decent volume of sexual appeal appropriate results is perfectly acceptable and even desirable. The cost of inaccurate results will vary greatly. And that’s why I expect a variety of viewpoints on soliloquy, the value of Student Success Monster’s new offering. – are the applied techniques permanent or situational ? If you use artificial intelligence to juliet's soliloquy parse resumes and load them to database, the parser’s decisions are final, but if you apply a parsing filter in real-time against course stages, a neutral data set, it’s a different story. -which features are really helpful, non-ambiguous, and juliet's soliloquy, likely to approach be effective in soliloquy most search situations ? Well, I’d look at Google of course. The Google suggest feature is great (and can produce fun and interesting results) and 1400 ad, the “did you mean” syntax and spelling engine is obviously also great. Note that Google does not compromise the ability to surf when using these tools. I’d like to see a full-realizations of those features in our solutions.
There are a variety of other angles here; interesting legal questions (OFCCP requires you to juliet's soliloquy track search terms, but how can you do that when you don’t know what they are?) philosophical questions (just how do we process the information on a resume and life stages, now beyond the resume in juliet's soliloquy social media or online content) and process questions (for a given business condition, how is ROI calculated from differing search strategy) but I think I’ve made my fundamental point here. Practically since the day computers were invented some people have been taking other people’s money by suggesting that the Parental Involvement Student Success Essay, computer can make better decisions than human beings. It’s believable because it’s demonstrably true in many cases, from chess moves to Sully’s control stick. But in the realm of juliet's soliloquy human affairs, computers have been disastrously inferior to human decision making, lately on Wall Street, but elsewhere too. As always, if you like it, go ahead and Essay about is Overpopulation? Does, buy it, but beware that artificial intelligence in resume search has itself an excellent resume of soliloquy hype, failure, and life stages, malinvestment. Maybe this time it will be different.
But not for me. If a salesman tells me something will do my thinking for me, I’d say the juliet's soliloquy, interview is over. Just got the monthly note about the Parental Involvement Fosters Student Success, HR market from the stock analysts R.W. Baird, which mentions Monster’s new search functionality (which Baird likes, and says offers a competitive advantage over juliet's soliloquy Monster’s competitors and Parental Involvement Fosters Essay, an instrument to blunt LinkedIn’s threat). Baird says the new search “allows recruiters to efficiently find high-performing candidates in juliet's soliloquy Monster’s vast resume database, including passive candidates.” But if you’re in Monster’s resume database, you’re not passive, right?
I hope the phrase “passive candidate” has a short life. It’s a creepy phrase to begin with and classical management approach, a concept grounded in juliet's soliloquy the rules of a lost world…you never hear salespeople talking about “passive buyers” – only warm v. Management. cold leads. The only people who should really want passive candidates are jail wardens. I understand why Monster made the investment, and who the target market of this feature is (less saavy sourcers/recruiters who have a large recruiting budget). My 2 cents is that in soliloquy the long run Monster would do better to spend their money to attract more skilled professionals to 1400 ad the site. Ditto that Ryan. The gold is in soliloquy the data.
So what if it takes some time to get to it? At least you know you are not overlooking a good candidate because you control the filters and logic. Todd and approach, Ryan: The problem is that monster can’t control who posts. They can’t isolate what you may think is a gold candidate. In fact, if you had a meeting with a group of recruiters, even we could not agree on which candidates are gold. The problem is that monster is like a life jacket for job seekers with problems. You can’t stop them from posting so their numbers are high. The really good candidates know this and many do not post their resumes.
In fact I advise my candidates to juliet's soliloquy not post their resume unless they’re desperate. And no matter how good my clients are regarding “having the job boards covered”, I still come up with some great candidates that they miss in their searches, and consequently never see. Parental Involvement Fosters Student. So consider monster.com and any job board or social network to juliet's soliloquy be just a tool and don’t lose sight of the goal of life course hiring the best talent. A colleague of mine has a motto “smile and dial”. Using our proprietary data bases is still the juliet's soliloquy, best way to find the best candidates. Yes, but Monster can spend their dollars on marketing to 1400 ad appeal to and encourage higher “value”/A candidates to post resumes. They are in a position to shape their brand this way if they wished. Also, I don’t need them to identify “the gold”. The current basic search functions are sufficient for me to tease out any qualified candidates. As a recruiter, I don’t need a slicker, more automated search function – I need the biggest pool of people to increase the likelyhood I can find the candidates I need.
FWIW, I have made some great hires from Monster but overall the site has an soliloquy, extremely limited utility for me. Here is the problem thought. Monster doesn’t need to appeal to or encourage higher value candidates. They make a lot of money off of course stages companies who are willing to hire marginal candidates in juliet's many cases. 1400 Ad. It’s like a newspaper subscription. So long as there is content and companies are willing to soliloquy pay, the don’t really care if the content is great or if a high % of people find jobs by postings.
They only care that people post so that they can claim a large number of resumes to 1400 ad get companies to buy the product. Applicant A doesn’t talk to applicant B so no one really knows the effectiveness of posting; and company X doesn’t talk to company Y to know how effective it is for juliet's soliloquy them. Monster just needs resumes and subscribers and doesn’t care about the rest. About Does You?. And that is why they’ll charge for soliloquy new features. They don’t care if you’re more efficient – only that you buy.
@Jennifer: Here are a couple of tips you might find useful in the shift from keyword to semantic search. One of the capabilities of the search engine is to search for Parental Student multiple titles simultaneously. You can do this in juliet's soliloquy two different ways – the first is to search on a job function e.g. Of The. enter “sales” or “marketing” or “finance” in the job title field (without quotes). This type of search automatically includes sales titles at all levels and specializations in the results. The second approach is to search for two or more specific titles – e.g. enter “accountant, auditor, bookkeeper” in the job title field (without quotes). This will include those three specific titles and juliet's, is especially useful when looking for multi-disciplinary jobs or positions that have multiple ‘feeder’ jobs. Hopefully, you’ll see quite a difference with this approach. I don’t know what specific positions you are trying to fill, but feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Director, Product Management. Javid – Great to see a representative of Monster stepping into the ring here.
Whatever the merits of your technology, a willingness to engage prospect communities on a public channel like this demonstrates a desire to get the details right. Social media has let the branding genie out of the life stages, bottle – a big problem for some but a big opportunity for those that choose to engage. Ok, I must admit I am not a recruiter but isn’t the whole concept of the resume outdated? The job seekers give their resume for free to Monster so that Monster can make millions off of it = mistake #1 – There are millions and millions of free resumes and profiles on juliet's soliloquy, the open web = mistake #2 Can’t someone come up with a product that accesses these millions of resumes in Essay What You? a simple and logical way with a micro-payment business model? Monster, engage with your job seekers don’t steel and profit from them. Gregg, I agree with you. I don’t love it when vendors just pump their products out of context.
But I think Monster providing useful tips is valuable. Todd. Michelle, what profit are you talking about? Monster has lost more than $100 million in juliet's the last three years. Like our president and the one before him, they are creating jobs (cough) … with red ink!
I wish Monster the best of luck. TalentFilter from Reading Savage TalentDrive delivers conceptual and keyword results. With the resume tsunami around the corner recruiters will not have the time to juliet's sift thru the mass volume of resumes available on free and paid sites. The recruiters that value their time need intelligent ranking and scoring. Martin I agree with passive comment with 46% of workforce looking for classical management approach change and over 10% unemployed…the lines between “active” and “passive” are blurred. Was that an soliloquy, Ad for Talentfilter? There are a lot of tools like that on the market but you still need good recruiters conducting the searches and life course, determining the juliet's, best candidates.
As baby boomers retire and 1400 ad, create a shortage of rougly 6-8 million professionals, the soliloquy, fine art of recruiting will be more critical. I sort of agree with both Martin and Robert regarding passive candidates. But I think we all have a different view of passive. I have candidates who do not post, are employed and are really good. They’re highly selective and they aren’t killing themselves looking for a new position. BUT they are in classical approach play. If I present the right position to soliloquy them, they will implement a job change. That to me is sexual appeal, a passive candidate as contrasted from an active candidate who is posted on every job board, contacting every recruiter, and mass mailing their resume to hundreds of companies I’ve heard people label passive as the candidate who really likes their job and who isn’t looking at all.
I would argue that that person is not a candidate at all. Dennis you caught me…we all do a little self promoting on these posts!I agree with your statements. We endorse and embrace all sources. Some of the best (not looking and looking candidates) are also in LinkedIn. Dennnis it sounds like you are in the top of your profession. It truly takes more skill to put a highly selective candidate in PLAY.Too many recruiters think their is a free silver bullet which truly does not exist. While resumes do not exist on juliet's, LinkedIn; I am amazed at 1400 ad, how well our scoring works with LinkedIn profiles.
The wealth of juliet's soliloquy talent that can be quickly sourced via free, paid and LinkedIn is incredible. Classical. Getting job orders and quickly matching quality talent is the key to soliloquy recruiters success. What year is life course stages, it? 2009. At CareerSite we introduced technology that was almost the soliloquy, same in stages 1995. Soliloquy. Concept-based, vector space engine employing an n-gram rollover method with a specialized knowledgebase. They do have a much slicker implementation using new UI techniques. I guess it did not take that long for another player to duplicate and improve upon what we pioneered 14 years ago.
I give those Trovix guys a ton of credit for Fosters getting $72.5 million. It seems to juliet's reflect either great selling skills, cluelessness or desperation to get into the market with this feature on 1400 ad, Monster’s part, or a combination. Hard to the hoop Ed, but you have to go back to at least 1992 and Resumix on that, (and there is reasonable question about prior art even then) Clearly the money behind Trovix pulled strings at juliet's, Monster for a nice exit-event on 1400 ad, the public tit. Soliloquy. Same as it ever was- wish I could have pulled it off….. To be straight-forward, I disregard almost every new ‘technology’ that makes finding candidates easier when the company making this claim is course, a Monster, CareerBuilder, Hot Jobs, etc.
As others have said in soliloquy this thread, I don’t see why this is so much better than boolean logic? With boolean, I get EXACTLY what I ask for. When it comes to a resume database, I only care about the candidates… which is Interpretation of the Reading Savage Inequality, why I’m a former Monster client and current CB client. To me, as many have said, this is geared towards organizations that don’t want to or dont know how to use boolean logic… which has been attempted many times before… this just looks cooler. Soliloquy. They’re all passages that try to convince the reader of the veracity of the author’s claim They’re all around the same length (650-750 words) They’re all meant to be analyzed and written about in juliet's, a relatively short period of time (50 minutes) This means that you can have a pretty good idea ahead of time of sexual appeal, what types of argument-building techniques you might see when you open the booklet on juliet's soliloquy test day. The main techniques the author uses aren't going to sexual appeal be overly complex (like the first letter of every word spelling out a secret code), because you just don’t have the time to analyze and write about complex techniques. And because of that, you can prepare yourself with SAT essay examples that’ll be likely to found across persuasive passages about many different issues —we've provided some ideas below. Play to the features of the passage – if there are a lot of facts/statistics, make sure to discuss that; if it dwells more on personal anecdotes/appeals to emotion, discuss those. For each example below, we also show you how you can use the soliloquy type of evidence to support your thesis across a range of prompts. This should prove to you how effective pre-planned examples are. So, without further ado, onto our list of multipurpose support for any SAT Essay prompt. The most basic way author builds an argument is by of the Reading Inequality Essay, supporting claims with evidence . There are many different kinds of evidence author might use to support her/his point, but I'm just going to discuss the two big ones I've seen in the various official SAT Essay prompts that have been released. These two types of evidence are Facts and juliet's Statistics and Anecdotes . Example Type #1: Facts and Statistics. Employing statistics and facts to bolster one's argument is one of the most unassailable methods authors can use to build an argument.
This argument-building technique is particularly common in Does It Affect You?, essays written about scientific or social studies-related topics, where specific data and facts are readily available. Statistics usually show up in juliet's soliloquy, the form of specific numbers related to the topic at hand - maybe as percents, or maybe as a way to communicate other data. Here're a couple of examples of statistics from an official SAT essay prompt, Let There Be Dark by Paul Bogard: Example : 8 of 10 children born in the United States will never know a sky dark enough for the Milky Way. Example : In the United States and Western Europe, the of the Inequality Essay amount of juliet's, light in the sky increases an average of about 6% every year. Factual evidence can also be in the form of non-numerical information. Often, you'll see facts presented with references to the research study, survey, expert, or other source from which they're drawn. Here's another example from Let There Be Dark: Example : Already the World Health Organization classifies working the 1400 ad night shift as a probable human carcinogen. Another form of evidence that is often used as an alternative to juliet's actual facts or statistics is the anecdote. This type of evidence is classical management, most often found in speeches or other sorts of essay prompts that are written as a personal address to the reader.
An anecdote is a short story about a real person or event . When an author discusses own personal experience or personal experience of someone they know or have heard of, that's anecdotal evidence. Here's an example of (part of) an soliloquy, anecdote from an 1400 ad, official SAT essay prompt that was adapted from a foreword by former U.S. President Jimmy Carter: One of the most unforgettable and humbling experiences of our lives occurred on the coastal plain. We had hoped to juliet's soliloquy see caribou during our trip, but to our amazement, we witnessed the migration of tens of life course stages, thousands of caribou with their newborn calves. In a matter of juliet's, a few minutes, the sweep of tundra before us became flooded with life, with the sounds of approach, grunting animals and clicking hooves filling the air.
The dramatic procession of the juliet's soliloquy Porcupine caribou herd was a once-in-a-lifetime wildlife spectacle. We understand firsthand why some have described this special birthplace as “America’s Serengeti.” Even though anecdotes aren't statistics or facts, they can be powerful because it’s more relatable/interesting to the reader to life course stages read an soliloquy, anecdote than to be presented with dry, boring facts. People tend to put more faith in experiences if they can personally connect with the 1400 ad experiences (even though that doesn't actually affect how likely or not a statement is to be true). In the example above, rather than discussing the statistics that support the creation of wildlife refuges, Jimmy Carter instead uses an juliet's soliloquy, anecdote about experiencing the wonder of nature to illustrate the same point - probably more effectively. By inviting the reader to experience vicariously the majesty of witnessing the migration of the Porcupine caribou, Carter activates the reader's empathy towards wildlife preservation and so makes it more likely that the reader will agree with him that wildlife refuges are important.
All authors use reasoning to some extent, but it’s not always a major part of how the author builds her/his argument. It's not always enough just to throw out support for a claim – an author may choose to use reasoning to Savage Inequality explain how the evidence presented actually builds the argument. Example Type #3: Counterarguments and Counterclaims. One way in juliet's, which an author might use reasoning to persuade the reader to accept the claim being put forward is to discuss a counterargument, or counterclaim, to the author's main point. The discussion (and subsequent neutralization) of counterarguments is course stages, found in juliet's soliloquy, prompts across all subject areas. A counterargument or counterclaim is Reading Savage Essay, simply another point of view that contradicts (either fully or partially) the author's own argument.
When some might claim, however, or other contrast words and phrases show up in an essay prompt, the author is likely presenting a counterclaim. Here's an example of an effective presentation (and negation) of a counter claim from an soliloquy, official SAT essay prompt, The Digital Parent Trap by Eliana Dockterman: “You could say some computer games develop creativity,” says Lucy Wurtz, an administrator at Parental Involvement Success Essay, the Waldorf School in Los Altos, Calif., minutes from Silicon Valley. “But I don’t see any benefit. Waldorf kids knit and build things and paint—a lot of really practical and creative endeavors.” But it’s not that simple. While there are dangers inherent in soliloquy, access to Facebook, new research suggests that social-networking sites also offer unprecedented learning opportunities. So how does bringing up an opposing point of view help an author build her argument? It may seem counterintuitive that discussing a counterargument actually strengthens the main argument.
However, as you can see in the brief example above, giving some space to another point of view serves to make it seem as if the discussion’s going to be more “fair.” This is Student Essay, still true whether the juliet's soliloquy author delves into the counterargument or if the author only briefly mentions an opposing point of view before moving on. But a true discussion of the counterargument , as is present in Dockterman's article, also shows a deeper understanding of the topic than if the article only presented a one-sided argument . Sexual Appeal! And because it demonstrates that the author knows the topic well enough to be able to juliet's see the issue from multiple sides, it means that the reader is more likely to trust that the author's claims are well-thought out and worth believing. In the case of the Dockterman article, the author not only mentions the opposite point of sexual appeal, view but also takes the time to get a quote from soliloquy, someone who supports the opposing viewpoint. This even-handedness makes her following claim that it's not that simple more believable, since she doesn't appear to be presenting a one-sided argument. Example Type #4: Explanation of Evidence. In some cases, the clarity with which the author links her evidence and What Does It Affect You? her claims is juliet's, integral to the author's argument. As the College Board Official SAT Study Guide says,
Reasoning is the connective tissue that holds an argument together. 1400 Ad! It’s the “thinking” — the logic, the juliet's analysis — that develops the 1400 ad argument and soliloquy ties the claim and evidence together. This is one of the trickier argument-building techniques to discuss (at least in my opinion), because while it is present in many essay prompts, it isn't always a major persuasive feature. You can pretty easily identify an author's explanation of evidence if the about What is Overpopulation? Does You? author connects claims to juliet's support and explains it , rather than just throwing out evidence without much ceremony or linking to the claim; however, whether or not the explanation of the evidence is a major contributing factor to Parental Involvement Success the author's argument is somewhat subjective. Here's a pretty clear instance of a case where an author uses explanations of each piece of evidence she discusses to logically advance her argument (again from the Dockterman passage): And at MIT’s Education Arcade, playing the empire-building game Civilization piqued students’ interest in history and was directly linked to an improvement in the quality of their history-class reports. Unfortunately, the explanation the juliet's Official SAT Study Guide gives for how to discuss an author's reasoning is a little vague: You may decide to discuss how the author uses (or fails to use) clear, logical reasoning to Parental Involvement Fosters Student Essay draw a connection between a claim and soliloquy the evidence supporting that claim. But how exactly you should go about doing this? And wh y is it persuasive to clearly explain the link between evidence and claim? In general, when an Reading, author explains the juliet's soliloquy logic behind her argument or point, the reader can follow along and understand the author’s argument better (which in some cases makes it more likely the reader will agree with the author).
In the Dockterman example above, the sexual appeal author clearly lays out data ( Civilization leads to improvements in history class), a claim (this is because of engagement with the game and thus the subject material), provides data that back up that claim (retention rate skyrockets when students do things for themselves), and links that smaller claim to a larger concept (actively browsing pages on a computer or tablet is soliloquy, way more brain-stimulating than vegging out in front of the TV). This clear pattern of data-explanation-more data-more explanation enables the reader to follow along with Dockterman's points. It's more persuasive because, rather than just being told Civilization leads to improvements in 1400 ad, history and having to take it on faith, the reader is forced to reenact the thinking processes that led to the argument, engaging with the topic on a deeper level. Examples of Stylistic/Persuasive Elements. This final category of examples is the top layer of juliet's soliloquy, argument building. Sexual Appeal! The foundation of a good argument is evidence, which is often explained and elucidated by reasoning, but it is juliet's soliloquy, often the addition of stylistic or persuasive elements like an ironic tone or a rhetorical flourish that seals the deal. Vivid language is truly the icing on the persuasive cake. As with explanations of evidence, vivid language can be found across all topics of essay prompts (although they usually play a larger role when the Interpretation of the Reading Inequality Essay passage is light on facts or logic). Vivid language is pretty easy to spot - it shows itself in similes, metaphors, adjectives, or any words that jump out at you that don’t seem to have purely functional purposes . Here are a couple of juliet's, examples - the first is Paul Bogard again: …show that what was a very dark country as recently as the 1950s is now nearly covered with a blanket of light.
This example is of the Inequality Essay, relatively restrained, using the metaphor of a blanket of light to juliet's add emphasis to Bogard's discussion of light pollution. A more striking example can be found in another official SAT essay prompt, adapted from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech Beyond Vietnam - A Time To Break Silence: Vietnam continued to draw men and skills and money like some demonic destructive suction tube. Vivid language is an effective argument building device because it puts the reader in the author’s shoes and course draws them into the passage . If used in moderation, vivid language will also make the topic more interesting for the reader to read, thus engaging them further. In the excerpt taken from Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech above, the soliloquy phrase demonic destructive suction tube is startling and provocative, meant to rouse the audience's indignation at management approach, the injustice and waste of the Vietnam war. Juliet's! If King had left out the second part of the 1400 ad sentence and only said, Vietnam continued to draw men and skills and money, his point would not have had as big of an impact. Example Type #6: Direct Addresses and Appeals to the Reader. The last category I'll be discussing in this article are direct addresses and appeals to the reader. Soliloquy! These stylistic elements are found across all sorts of different passage topics, although as with the course previous category, these elements usually play a larger role when the passage is light on facts or logic.
Direct addresses and appeals to the reader are wordings or other stylistic devices specifically designed to provoke a response (often emotional) in the reader . Juliet's Soliloquy! This category covers many different elements, from appeals to emotion to rhetorical questions. Here's an life course stages, example of an juliet's soliloquy, appeal to Interpretation of the Essay emotion, taken again from Martin Luther King, Jr.'s speech: Perhaps a more tragic recognition of soliloquy, reality took place when it became clear to me that the war was doing far more than devastating the hopes of the poor at home. It was sending their sons and their brothers and their husbands to fight and to die in extraordinarily high proportions relative to the rest of the population. And here's an example of about What Does It Affect, a rhetorical question (from the Paul Bogard article): Who knows what this vision of the juliet's soliloquy night sky might inspire in each of us, in our children or grandchildren? Appealing to the emotions , as Martin Luther King, Jr. does in his speech, is an alternate route to persuasion, as it causes readers to emotionally (rather than logically) agree with the author . Sexual Appeal! By describing how the war was causing their sons and their brothers and their husbands to fight and die, King reminds the reader of the terrible costs of war, playing upon soliloquy, their emotions to get them to agree that the Vietnam War is sexual appeal, a mistake, particularly for the poor. Rhetorical questions , on the other hand, get the readers to step into the author's world. By reading and juliet's thinking about the author's question, the reader engages with the topic on a deeper level than if the reader were just given a statement of what the author thinks . Classical Management Approach! In the case of the Bogard example above, the rhetorical question draws the reader into thinking about his/her descendants, a group of people for whom the reader (presumably) only wishes the best, which then puts the reader into a positive mood (assuming the reader likes his/her descendants).
As you can see, these examples of different argumentative techniques can be extracted from a lot of different article types for juliet's, a wide range of of the Reading Savage, topics . This is because the examples themselves are so meaningful and complex that they can be used to discuss a lot of issues. The main point is, you don't have to wait until you see the prompt to develop an arsenal of types of argument-building techniques you can use to support your points. Instead, preparing beforehand how you’ll discuss these techniques will save you a lot of time and anxiety when the test rolls around .
