After obtaining shots of him with a young woman, the story hits the newsreels, and the real Evelyn (Faye Dunaway) confronts him at his office.
Furthermore, clues begin to point to a government scandal, and Gittes discovers that water is being dumped into the ocean despite a drought. While attempting to contact Mulwray, Gittes finds the police investigating his death, and of origins, he is hired by Evelyn to find out how it happened.
